Pakistan to resume Musharraf case

November 12, 2007

The court is expected to resume a hearing into challenges to Musharraf's election victory this week and could reach a decision by the weekend, a newspaper reported on Monday. While imposing emergency rule on November 3, Musharraf also suspended the constitution, sacked most top judges, and locked up lawyers, rounding up most of the political opposition and rights activists. Rivals have filed legal challenges in the Supreme Court, arguing Musharraf was ineligible to contest the poll while still army chief. The government says 2,500 people have been detained during the emergency, although Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party says well over 5,000 of its activists have been picked up.
