Gunfights ends Arafat rally

A sea of yellow Fatah flags and waves of emotion filled a Gaza square for the biggest demonstration President Mahmoud Abbas's secular faction has held in the impoverished territory since Hamas Islamists routed its fighters in violence last June.<P>Hamas has banned opposition rallies since its Gaza takeover but any move to prevent a remembrance ceremony for Arafat, the iconic leader who died on Nov. 11, 2004, would have been widely unpopular among Palestinians.<P>Though Arafat failed to create a state in territory occupied by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war, many Palestinians miss the charisma, cunning and street clout with which he cobbled together a national consensus among rival factions.<P>Arafat died in a French hospital on November 11, 2004 after being shunned by Israel and the United States as an obstacle to peace.
