India battles domestic violence

As the world prepares to mark a somber International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, domestic violence remains widespread in India, where tens of thousands of women annually complain of abuse at the hands of their husbands. A new law which goes into effect Thursday is designed to help bring an end to the problem, but some campaigners fear that, though powerful on paper, it could fall prey to lax enforcement.
