Tension in Fiji
November 30, 2006
Troops are off the streets again after taking control of parts of the capital Suva, but residents are stockpiling goods, fearing the fourth coup in 20 years. The army's ultimatum comes despite an offer from the Prime Minister to withdraw contentious legislation - including amnesty for organisers of a previous coup. Talks between the two sides in New Zealand have ended in failure. Australian troops are now stationed offshore to evacuate foreigners.
