French would-be candidates pass first hurdle

Friday marked the final day for candidates to make their run for the presidency official by presenting a minimum of 500 signatures of public officials who back their bid. The three top contenders, Nicolas Sarkozy, Segolene Royal and Francois Bayrou, long ago secured their spots but far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen just squeezed in with enough sponsorships this week. But a question mark still hangs over farmer-activist Jose Bove, who said he may be four or five signatures short of the number required to get on the ballot for the April and May votes.
