Minister killed in bomb blast

Nation Building Minister D.M. Dassanayake was travelling in a car when the bomb went off in the town of Ja-Ela, north of Colombo. The windows of the Toyota Land Cruiser were shattered and its sides peppered with shrapnel by the Claymore fragmentation mine. The bombing is the latest in a series of attacks on government officials and the military in recent months.
