The violence has deepened growing anxiety since last month's elections cast the east African country into chaos. Mediation efforts continue - led by former UN chief Kofi Annan - but the violence has gathered a momentum of its own now. Annan is among those warning it runs broader and deeper than the dispute over President Mwai Kibaki's re-election, which the opposition says was rigged.
