Merger news offset recession jitters

Better-than-expected fourth quarter results out of McDonald's helped soothe profit jitters and aided in keeping recession fears at bay. But weak monthly sales figures out of the world's largest restaurant chian hurt the stock's performance. Wall Street also overlooked a drop in December new home sales which exceeded forecasts.Conway Gittens reports from New York.
