Thousands flee Chad assault
February 05, 2008
Hundreds of people were wounded and thousands left, terrified, to become refugees in neighbouring Cameroon after a rebel attack on the Chadian capital N'Djamena. More than 2,000 insurgents stormed the city in armed pick up trucks at the weekend in an attack Chad says was backed by Sudan. Rebels hope to unseat Chad's President Idriss Deby and have promised to return. Since the recent fighting, Deby's government won support from France and the U.N. Security Council, opening the way for foreign aid to help thousands who have fled a two-day assault on the capital.
