Iran goes to the polls

Iranians voted on Friday in elections expected to tighten the conservatives' grip on parliament, following the mass disqualification of most of the candidates of the reformist coalition. Their sidelining means it will be difficult to use the vote to gauge the real popularity of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, amid widespread discontent over the country's economic situation and continuing tensions with the West over the Iranian nuclear programme.
