Security forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas opened fire on a Hamas rally in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Tensions between Hamas and Fatah are at their highest in a decade, and follow months of failed talks to form a unity government. Hours earlier, gunbattles between the two rivals erupted at the Rafah border crossing after the Palestinian prime minister Ismail Haniyeh was prevented from re-entering Gaza. When the Hamas leader was eventually allowed to cross, his convoy came under fire. Hamas have accused a prominant Fatah figure of trying to assassinate the prime minister, a move that is bound to heighten tensions further.
