Michelle Obama, wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, was the featured speaker at the opening night of the party's nominating convention on Monday. In front of a huge crowd waving "Michelle" signs, she said her husband represented typical American values, rejecting Republican charges that Obama is an aloof celebrity. Michelle Obama -who would be the first African-American first lady if her husband is elected on November 4--also put a gloss on her own assertive personality. She has drawn fire from Republicans for saying she only recently became proud of her country.
