Thai military chief promises not to use firearms despite new emergency powers amid rising protest. The deployment of troops in Bangkok raised the spectre of an army seizure of power less than two years after the military kicked out then Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, although Thailand's military promised they wouldn't fire a shot.
