25 turtles return to the ocean
October 11, 2006
The 25 turtles lived in captivity for a year before being released into the ocean in Santa Marta, Colombia. As part of an ongoing turtle raising project in Colombia, turtles are raised in captivity to reach a sufficient size to survive in the wild. The project aims at increasing the percentage of young turtles reaching adulthood. This latest batch of turtles is the largest group to be released into the ocean. Over the past four years the group has released around 5000 turtles.
