Earlier this year investigators began piecing together tips and confessions leading them to hundreds of grave sites after President Alvaro Uribe reached a peace deal with right-wing paramilitary gangs blamed for some of the worst atrocities. Uribe, who was re-elected in May after Colombians applauded him for cutting violence, has negotiated the demobilization of more than 30,000 militia fighters under a plan offering them light prison terms for giving up the gun, confessing to crimes and offering victims reparation. The attorney general's office says the remains of 240 victims have been recovered this year and more than 2,500 other graves await exhumation nationwide. Leads from victims trickle in as fear of retaliation from armed groups slowly wanes.
