Imelda Marcos cleared of corruption

October 06, 2006

Imelda Marcos, famous for her lavish shoe collection, thanked God after being cleared by an anti-graft court in the Philippine capital. Marcos and co-accused Jose Benitez were found innocent of a 13-year-old graft case for holding shares in a government corporation while serving in the Marcos cabinet in 1977. The court said state prosecutors had failed to establish "the essential element of the offence charged" because the government corporation she was running was a non-stock and non-profit entity and would not constitute graft.Imelda and husband Ferdinand Marcos have been accused of looting up to $10 billion from the Southeast Asian country in bank deposits, shares, jewellery, art and property before he was ousted by an army-backed popular revolt in 1986.
