Many of the homeless pets were left behind by owners who fled Lebanon during the 34-day Hizbollah-Israeli war. The pets were airlifted from the capital Beirut to the 'Best Friends' animal sanctuary, America's largest refuge for abused and abandoned pets. The pets, which will soon be available for adoption, will join about 2,000 other animals currently cared for at the no-kill sanctuary in Kanab, Utah three-and-a-half-hours outside of Las Vegas. Best Friends has also been assisting human groups in Israel, where people were also evacuated without their pets. But the major crisis for animals has been in Lebanon.
