China's film boom

The Cannes film festival has always been a key showcase for Asian cinema, particularly films from China. Mainland China may have missed out on a selection at the festival this year despite the fact that its domestic film industry is booming -- ranging from big budget extravaganzas to gritty art house films. While the industry surges ahead, the country's strict state censorship system remain firmly in place, forcing directors to spend as much creative energy working around the system as making the actual films.
