At least eight members of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas' Presidential Guard were killed on Tuesday in an attack by Hamas gunmen near Gaza's Karni commercial crossing with Israel. It was the deadliest clash since renewed fighting between power-sharing rivals Hamas and President Abbas' Fatah faction erupted five days ago. Both sides have ignored pleas from their leaders to end the bloodshed. Tuesday is the annual 'day of catastrophe', what Palestinians call the "al-Naqba", commemorating the creation of the state of Israel and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. The anniversary is normally marked by parades and rallies. Instead, Palestinians are speaking of a new "Naqba" amid deepening fears of civil war.
