Business Update: Jobless rate soars

The U.S. unemployment rate jumped to 8.5 percent in March, its highest since 1983, as the labor market continued to suffer through the recession. The Labor Department announced 663,000 jobs were cut last month, bringing the total number of jobs lost during the recession to 5.1 million.
