A 10-day beachside extravaganza which is the world's most important face-off of international film opens on Wednesday. The Cannes festival rolls out its carpet for a host of directors, actors and hangers-on beginning with its premiere of Wong Kar Wai's "My Blueberry Nights". It is one of 22 films competing for Cannes's prestigious Palme d'Or prize, which will be chosen by a jury headed by British director Stephen Frears.
