Bulls sidestep economic gloom

Wall Street finished higher in another choppy session as investors overlooked recession jitters fueled by a worsening labor market. The Dow gained 172 points to 8,591. The S&P 500 rose 21 points to 870. The Nasdaq gained 42 points to 1,492. Crude oil prices dipped to $46.69 a barrel.
