Coup confusion in Guinea
December 24, 2008
It still isn't clear who's in charge in the west African country of Guinea, where mutinous troops say they seized power after the death of the president. The U.S. embassy calls the situation in the seaside capital Conakry "fluid and uncertain". Hours after the death on Tuesday of long-serving President Lansana Conte, the leader of a group of army officers went on state radio to say the government and other institutions had been dissolved in favour of a National Council for Democracy. The plotters are promising elections within 60 days.
