Final take-off at Cold War airport
October 31, 2008
Hundreds of people bid farewell to Berlin's Tempelhof airport, a relic from the Cold War, as it closes after 85 years amid controversy. Called the "mother of all airports", and built by the Nazis, Tempelhof played a vital role in the Berlin airlift during the Soviet blockade of the city. Later the commercial airport began to make a loss, and despite a public campaign to save it, the last planes have taken off from Tempelhof and the future of the site remains uncertain.
