Hindus gather for Ganges bathing

January 05, 2007

About 70 million Hindus are expected to converge in northern India to wash away their sins in the Ganges river. Expected to be the largest gathering of people on earth. The Hindu festival of "Ardh Kumbh Mela" or Half Pitcher Festival takes place over 42 days. Hindus believe that bathing in the Ganges during the festivals cleanses them of sin, speeding the way to the attainment of nirvana or the afterlife.
