Bomb Village

October 07, 2006

The U.S. military dropped more bombs on Laos than on neighboring Vietnam during its war against communism in Indochina that ended in failure three decades ago. Millions of unexploded bombs and ""bombies,"" small devices designed to be detonated by curious villagers and children, still lie in Laos' eastern provinces bordering Vietnam. It is common for many poor families in Laos to keep some of their savings or assets in bombs. Sometimes they hold the metal like commodity traders since the price keeps spiking up. The surge in scrap metal prices has led to more and more people intentionally contacting live bombs resulting in many accidents and deaths. Roger Arnold/WPN
