Panama Canal vote

October 22, 2006

The government plans to spend over five billion dollars on the biggest renovation project in the canal's 92-year history. The canal's outdated lock system is too small for many modern tankers. But opponents say the country doesn't have the money and could go bankrupt. Opened in 1914 the canal ranks alongside the Eiffel Tower and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco as one of the world's top engineering feats. Panamanians go to the polls on Sunday to decide its future.
