Popular Jersey Politician May Lose Job

October 01, 2009

He's losing a power struggle for control of the senate, but says what's happening to him is personal. And today, Codey gave us recordings from a source he calls 'deep throat' that he claims points the finger at a long time foe.For most of this decade, Codey has been the powerful Senate President. But a few weeks ago, he says an aide recorded this anonymous phonecall.Codey claims the warning about confidential financial records covered his entire family....Codey has long considered South Jersey businessman George Norcross, whose money-raising has helped democrats all over the state, a political enemy. The recording codey released of someone he calls his deep throat referred to their not-so-private relationship.Codey could offer no proof that the calls actually came from someone with knowledge of the Norcross organization and he still doesn't know anything about the caller.Norcross declined an interview, but released A statement saying, ?It's unfortunate that at the very time the party is united and working hard to elect democrats in November, Sen. Codey is preoccupied with his own self-importance and petty personal paranoia aimed at dividing the party. The fall of former governor Jim Mcgreevey 5 years ago pushed Codey into the limelight, as he took on the role of acting governor, while constitutionally required to continue serving as Senate President. But in recent months, a blog entitled Codey Come Clean has attacked him.And South Jersey Senator Steve Sweeney now claims he has the votes to replace Codey as Senate President come January. We asked Codey if he had reached out to the U.S. Attorney if he felt any laws were broken, and he said no, declining to explain why. But he said he would welcome such an investigation.
