Iraqi PM vows to rein in militias

October 25, 2006

Iraqi special forces backed by U.S air strikes killed five people in the Baghdad Shi'ite Sadr City slum during an overnight operation to capture an insurgent commander accused of running death squads. U.S. forces blame the Mehdi Army militia, loyal to firebrand Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, for helping to drive Iraq to the edge of all-out civil war. The group is believed to be behind hundreds of sectarian murders and kidnaps in Baghdad. The Iraqi government is under renewed pressure to bring insurgent groups, like the Mehdi Army, under control within 18-months to pave the way for a U.S. withdrawal.
