Britain's former Chancellor Gordon Brown succeeds Tony Blair as prime minister. Britain's former Chancellor of the Exchequer was unchallenged in his bid to lead the Labour Party and assume the role of prime minister after Tony Blair announced his resignation last month. Brown, 56, said health, education and ending child poverty would be his priorities after a long, agonising wait for the top job.
