some scrooges are ripping off the salvation army. on monday, five kettles-- full of money-- were stolen. we've also learned police busted a fake bell ringer. our kayla anderson is live in the newsroom with details. the salvation army says they're probably out at least a thousand dollars because of those stolen kettles. it's the work of thieves-- ripping off your generous donations. thsalvation army says five of its kettles were ripped off in one day. one of the victims was this bell ringer near coors and central. "some lady came up and she had the name tag was a salvation army, like a worker. and i thought she was a worker and she came and told me that she came to pick up the buckets because there were people stealing them." when the bell ringer went to call her supervisor and confirm the pickup... the thief took off... with the kettle. "they shouldn't be doing that because it's for a cause." the salvation army has since retrained its bell ringers-- giving them a strict list of who's authorized to pick up kettles. the salvation army also wants you to keep an eye out for bogus bell ringers... like the one busted monday at an alquerque walmart. "he confiscated the stand and the bucket and the bells and they even had the name tag." if you're worried a bell ringer isn't the real deal... the salvation army says you should call them or call police. "they normally have a red or blue apron on that says "i am a bell ringer" and it has the salvation army logo on it. they should have a name tag that has the salvation army logo on it, with their first name." there are about 40 salvation army kettle collection spots around the city this year. that's slightly more than last year
