an albuquerque engineer is killed in mexico - by gunmen who may have been after a police officer who drove a similar car. it's a story we broke tonight at five .. our gadi schwartz has been working the phones all day- trying to figure out what happened in juarez. he is live in the newsroom with what he found. - i've spoken with several juarez reporters and investigators- who say this murder could be a case of mistaken identity. on monday 35 year old manuel valdez an engineer for ethicon endo surgery in albuquerque- was the second person killed in the same juarez intersection - in two hour span. both valdez and the man killed hours earlier were driving a silver late model chevy silverado- the same type of truck used by a mexican police officer who was killed the next day. mexican journalists say mexican officials did not collect ballistic evidence from the scene of valdez's murder- but bullet casing used in assault rifles were recovered from the earlier murder scene. we have also been told valdez may have had his wife in the car who was also shot- but survived no word on her condition. ethicon would not confirm if he was working at one of its plants in juarez. but today the company released a statement saying quote "we are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of manuel valdez. he was a valued member of the ethicon endo- surgery family. our deepest, heartfelt sympathies and prayers go out to his family and friends."
