the cold temperatures are causing major problems tonight. water pipes are freezing and bursting all over albuquerque ..the water authority has received more than a hundred calls of broken pipes. including this one here at the macedona baptist church apartment complex on edith which is now without water. we spotted frozen water outside the building. we're told 3 of the 5 apartments are vacant.// and some albuquerque schools are a big mess right now after a couple huge water line breaks that have caused flooding inside. cristina rodda continues are team coverage from cibola high school. cristina. aps says 5 to 6 rooms are damaged and the cost to repair them is estimated at about 40 thousand dollars. that's all from a water line break that left 4 inches of water in one of the buildings here at cibola high school. the water line that ruptured is in the ceiling of one of the wings in the high school. you can see just how bad it is insde the classroom-- water everywhere... it's a mess in there. aps police found the break just just after three this afternoon after checking on an alarm at the school that went off. the water is shut off and they are working to fix the line. aps says the cold temperatures also caused a water line break at ernie pyle middle school near arenal and isleta. there were 50 gallons per minute rushing out of the water line-- above a science classroom. aps says the break was discovered around two this afternoon when a security alarm was tripped. maintence workers are working on getting the water shut off, the pipe fixed and the clean up started. aps says this will all be fixed before students return to class on wednesday. we're also following developments on another water main break at mckinley middle school. when we got their the water that had flowed out into the street was already frozen. road crews were called out to put sand on the ice. aps says the water line break will be fixed by the time students return to class on wednesday. live from near ellison roadcoors cristina rodda eyewitness news four. it wasn't just schools impacted by broken water pipes today. kob eyewitness news 4 went inside a dentist's office on atrisco near coors and ladera today as crews worked to shut off a pipe that broke. water flooded the inside of the building ... soaking the carpets. no word on how long repairs will take.// the water utility authority has some tips to keep your pipes from freezing. officials say you should insulate outside pipes and faucets. sealing off cracks and vents to exposed pipes will keep cold air away. experts say you also shouldn't turn the heat all the way down when you leave the house for an extended period of time. and if your pipes are prone to freezing-- turning on a faucet so it can drip to keep water flowing which should help prevent problems
