The city has increased the length of time that yellow lights change to red at red light camera intersections in Albuquerque. The idea is to allow cars more time to clear an intersection to avoid a crash. When the City of Albuquerque had a team at University of New Mexico research the effectiveness of red light cameras, Mayor Berry also wanted to know what could be done to keep people safe. Researchers came across an interesting study about yellow lights. "In particular, they found at least one study that mentioned increasing the yellow light timing to as long as second and a half could reduce red light running by 50 percent," said the city's Chief of Public Safety, T.J. Wilham. At Central and Louisiana, traffic officials increased the amount of time on red lights. The reason being if someone does run a red light, everyone is stopped a little longer allowing that car to clear before drivers get a green light.
