Crackdown on school zone speeders nabs city bus driver
January 22, 2011
a city bus driver could be in trouble because of what we captured on camera today. we were following up on a speeding story at manzano high school when police say they clocked a city bus driver speeding through a school zone. joe vigil talked to the city.... and caught up with the bus driver. he's live at manzano with the story. in the last three days here we have capture driver after driver speeding through the school zone. you can now add a city bus driver to that list. after our story about speeders around manzano high school police were cracking down today. and our camera was there when an officer says he clocked this city bus going 34 miles per hour in the 25 mile per hour school zone. we showed our video to transit officials. "safety on our buses for both our passengers and for pedestrians as well as people on the road is paramount to us, so we thank you for bringing this to our attention." we caught up with the driver tonight. .. and we obtained this video from the bus. you can see the driver going past some school zone lights. he then picked up some passengers and continued on. "i didn't realize i was still in the zone." the driver told us he obey's school zone speed limits. "there's 3 or 4 schools up and down lomas here. i'm always within the limit. this time i wasn't. so what can i say?" the driver told us the officer just gave him a warning. but transit officials say they will still investigate ...and hope this video sends a message to other drivers. "hopefull seeing something like this will serve as an example that you need to watch your speed watch what your doing and just drive safely." any punishment would depend on the driver's record. it can range from a simple verbal warning to termination. as far as the driver only getting a warning from police--an apd spokesperson told me tonight its officers discretion about giving a ticket or a warning
