we continue to learn more tonight about the bizarre case that left a mother dead--- her three children in the hospital-- and her car scorched in the middle of cibola county. our eddie garcia is live in grants where the children are recovering. it's tonight's big story. the sheriff's office tells us these three children walked almost a mile in freezing temperatures to safety last night after they woke up in a burning car with their mother dead in the drivers seat. investigators are telling us it started yesterday when gaylene miles picked up her kids from school. she then drove them about 60 miles southwest of grants to a recreational pond on the ramah navajo reservation. at some point in the evening she took some sort of strong medication and reportedly gave some to each of her kids. that's when investigators say the children passed out and miles died in the drivers seat with the engine running. the sheriffs office believes the woman's foot rested on the gas pedal causing the engine to rev for for an extended period of time, they say according to the state fire marshals office that caused the engine to overheat and catch fire. investigators think it was the smoke that woke up the kids. the children woke up from the sleep got out of the vehicle removed the mother from the vehicle and that's where we found her body. the children early this morning walked 3/4 of a mile from where the vehicle was at to a residents and that where they were taken from there to a clinic for medical reasons. investigators are piecing together motive and cause. the children are recovering from minor burns and smoke inhalation here at the hospital. we're being told their father is by their side.
