As consumers look to save hundreds of dollars on used tires, KOB Eyewitness News 4 found some Albuquerque shops selling worn out tires that police consider "dangerous" and "illegal." Some of the tires purchased by KOB Eyewitness News 4 were so worn, even the tread indicators on the tires were barely visible. Tire industry representatives believe the economy has people turning to potentially dangerous used tires more often. "We hear particularly with the recession that more people may be turning to used tires, as an alternative. They may have lost their job, they have financial pressures, their vehicle needs tires, but they may not be able to afford new tires. And a used tire may be an attractive alternative," Daniel Zielinski of the Rubber Manufacturer's Association said. Zielinski said the used tire industry is difficult to track.
