Teen illegally downloads 'Hurt Locker', fined $2900
February 24, 2011
A 17-year-old Albuquerque teenager has agreed to settle with lawyers representing the movie "Hurt Locker" to pay $2900 for illegally downloading the movie last year. Skyler Attebom says almost everyone he knows illegally downloads material, so he did not think much about it. While the movie was critically acclaimed and won the Academy Award for Best Picture last year, it didn't make much money. Now lawyers for the movie are going after people who "stole" a look at it. They gave the Attebom family until March 11th to agree to the settlement or be included in a big lawsuit. Attebom's father was notified last year that an illegal download was being investigated on his account. His son initially denied doing it, but later confessed. The father is making his son pay all the money himself and is making him share his story on television so other people don't make the same mistake his teen did. According to The-Numbers.com, a website that publishes box office data, the movie grossed about $17 million in the U.S. and cost $15 million to make.
