School board to discuss drug testing La Cueva athletes
March 01, 2011
Random drug testing could be on the way for athletes and other students at La Cueva High School in Albuquerque. School board members will be discussing the idea at a meeting on Monday, although a final vote is not scheduled. It would be a "first" for APS and is one of several proposals to clean up La Cueva's scandal-tainted athletic program. The latest episode involved football players drinking on the team bus after a play off loss to Mayfield in Las Cruces last November. Coach Fred Romero and assistant Mike Tixier were transferred to other schools and banned from coaching. In 2009, APS fired La Cueva baseball coach Stan McKeever after he hired two strippers to dance for two of his players in a Denver hotel room.
