overnor susana martinez has a new plan to protect children. today she announced new hotline people can call if they suspect child abuse. and -- despite the state's budget crisis -- martinez is hiring more people to investigate claims of abuse. kayla anderson has the story: story time with the governor takes a serious twist-- as she reads aloud a book about the difference between good touching and bad touching. "you say no." it's a message that fits right in with the areas two latest sex abuse cases. antonio martinez and wade driver were both arrested yesterday-- facing minute thumbnail 05:10 pm child sex charges. "we are remembering the little ones. the most vulnerable and defenseless among us, who instead of finding love and protection in the shelter of their home, lived in fear of the very people who were responsible of taking care of them." for child abuse awareness month- the governor ordered flags flown at half staff today... in honor of briandra pena... and leland valdez-- who both died of child abuse. in the valdez case-- his family had been referred to cyfd in the past-- but steps were never taken to save him. the governor says that won't happen again-- authorizing new hires within cyfd. "we're going to hire the people that we need to keep our kids safe." so far that's equaled 16 new jobs. "we'll get those staff trained. we've got excellent supervision for those folks so that they can provide the services that we need provided."
