The University of New Mexico board of regents meets Tuesday morning to make a final decision on a tuition increase, but not before students voice their concerns about the proposed hikes. The board is to decide whether tuition should be raised by 6.3 percent next school year. The increase was approved by UNM's Finance and Facilities Committee, which equates to an increase of about $40 in student fees to help with upkeep of libraries, computers, athletics and recreation facilities. But students say the steady increase in enrollment, a hefty reserve fund and cuts to academic programs means there should not be a need for higher tuition. To ensure they are heard, frustrated students planned to hold a press conference at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday prior to the board's meeting to state their expectations for the 2011-2012 school year budget.
