Espanola man in custody after late-night SWAT standoff
April 16, 2011
An Espanola man is in custody on several charges after police say they saw him attack his girlfriend while she was breastfeeding her 2-month-old. Officers responded to an Espanola home after receiving a 911 hang-up call Thursday evening. When they arrived no one answered the door, so they walked around the house and looked through a window to make sure everything was alright. That's when police say saw a woman sittling on the couch breastfeeding, her face and body covered in blood. When police rang the doorbell, they saw Anthony Martinez, 27, throw the woman to the floor. She yelled out for help, saying he was going to kill her. Police used a hammer to break a window so they could get into the home at which time Martinez barricaded himself and a 4-year-old boy in a room. SWAT members were then called out to the home. Martinez eventually surrendered himself and the child.
