Chopper crashes south of Kirtland AFB

orce base that crashed and burned in valencia county today stuart dyson is live in our minute thumbnail 04:59 pm newsroom to tell us what happened to the four airmen on board. all four crew members are okay after the chopper went down at a remote training site south of the base at about 11:40 am. the burnt wreckage of the uh-1n "huey" helicopter - still smoldering in the desert off highway six between los lunas and belen - the chopper and crew from the 58th special operations wing stationed at kirtland - they were on a training flight - almost certainly for the wing's combat search and rescue mission or other special ops missions - these are generally higher risk than regular military operations and sometimes accidents do occur .
