about 50 people are homeless after a fire consumed their apartment complex. it took firefighters several hours to beat down the massive fire. our crews were the first on the scene to bring you live pictures this morning. cristina rodda is live on montgomery near carlisle with our big story. crisitina. right now... arson investigators are checking to see if the building stable enough for them to begin their investigation. i spoke to a fire department spokesperson-- he says the fire destroyed at least one apartment building that was home to about 50 tenants here canyon vista apartments. furious flames reached out from this apartment building-- inside it took over and pushed massive amounts of smoke into the sky. it looks pretty ugly really thick smoke and dark.and i'm figuring you know the whole place is already gone. just after 7 this morning-- firefighters worked from all angles to douse the fire into submission. all tenants, including german mena, cassandra chavez and their baby boy bently ray-- were safely evacuated.. it's stressful i mean i'm glad we're safe yeah but we lost everything, his diapers, his formula, everything is gone." this is pretty tragic especially more because of my son-- that was our biggest worry getting him out before he inhaled any smoke." in all 50 bernalillo firefighters pushed back the flames but it was the dark and heavy smoke that nearly blocked the sun-- that told them how to win this battle. "we've been taught to pay attention to the smoke, the heavy brown smoke indicates structure which is the wood timbers, that material is what's on fire." it took crews about 7 hours to put the fire out. this small family, like many others here, must figure out what to do next. "as of right now we don't know what it looks like in there what's damaged i'm sure everything might be." firefighters say a total of fifty people were displaced. we're continuing to get updates on the investigation into the cause of this fire... we'll have the very latest for you coming up at 6-30.. plus we talk to red cross who's helping these families tonight
