Security upgrades coming for empty Anasazi Building
May 16, 2011
The abandoned Anasazi building in downtown Albuquerque will see some much needed security upgrades this afternoon. Mayor Richard Berry spoke with the FDIC last week. A city spokesman said the corporation agreed to pay for $100,000 in security enhancements around the Anasazi while they decide what's next for the building. The building at Central Avenue and 6th Street has become a target for vandals – from copper thefts to break-ins, drug use and graffiti. New fences are expected to be erected around the street-level of the building, and windows will be boarded up and painted to match the facade of the existing building. The mayor's office says it is continuing to work with the FDIC, which holds the note and mortgage on the Anasazi, to come to an agreement on the building's future as quickly as possible.
