the vandalism that's plagued the vacant anasazi building in downtown albuquerque could be coming to a halt. the f-d-i-c, which holds the mortgage on the building, is spending big bucks to secure it ... because it could be awhile before anyone steps in to finish it. jeff maher is live near 6th and central with what's changing. jeff? before today, vandals didn't have too much trouble breaking into the anasazi building, which was supposed to be developed into luxury condos. they had a variety of ways minute thumbnail 05:03 pm to get inside to vandalize and steal supplies. but, now it's going to be a lot harder for them. for the first time in years -- construction work is being done at the anasazi building. but the work isn't aimed at finishing the building -- but instead -- to secure it. mayor richard berry announced the security upgrades at a press conference outside of the dilapidated building. "we've had situations where a lot of people have climbed up on top of the canopy and gotten up into the building there, so that's ultimately going to be removed" the canopy is being torn down. the windows that vandals used to break in through are being boarded up and painted over -- and the locks are being changed. back in february we discovered a hole in a gate and brought that to the city's attention. that's going to be fixed too. the f-d-i-c is spending 100- grand to improve security. "if you see the building the architecture is nice, they've done a nice job with the design, i just want to see it completed and put into a useful purpose" but the building will likely be sitting quietly for a long time. the mayor says legal proceedings alone could take up to a year and a half. "i know that the legal proceedings can take a long time, so it's important that we minute thumbnail 05:04 pm get things buttoned up for now, but in the long run, i really believe that they're moving this project forward" the mayor says he will be meeting with the f-d-i-c again in june to get an update on the project. several developers have already shown interest in helping finish it. live near central and 6th. jeff maher. kob. eyewitness news 4.
