Sochi wins 2014 Winter Olympics

The Black Sea resort of Sochi has won the right to stage the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. The Black Sea resort beat South Korean favourites Pyeongchang by four votes. The third candidate Salzburg of Austria was knocked out after the first round of voting. The Russian bid was boosted by the personal intervention of president Vladimir Putin, whose address to the International Olympic Committee meeting in Guatamala was delivered in three languages.
