tonight a little bit of progress to report on the wallow fire threatning new mexico ... as more video of the flames come into our newsroom tonight. the forest service lists the eastern arizona fire at nearly 409-thousand acres tonight... it has destroyed 29 homes in arizona. this is the latest map of the burn area, showing it's still lingering just west of the new mexico state line. the fire is still at five percent containment tonight. as the wallow fire continues to grow ... residents in luna and reserve are preparing for the worst. today... governor susana martinez visited the area to show her support. eddie garcia has been in luna since last night and joins us live with more. as the professionals gear up to battle the blaze... so are the residents in the community doing whatever they can to defend their homes. summer break has given way to bustling hallways once again at the high school in reserve. instead of students with books it's national guard troops and emergency management officials. the school's it director chad fuller, a former firefighter is working day and night well beyond his job description setting up a command center. 40:22 it makes me wish i was up there helping more directly but i figured if i cant be there at least i can help do my best to provide everything they need here. fuller is using the crisis as a teaching tool for his students who are volunteering to help. 41:54 they were here yesterday making cables and putting this command center together and it was really neat to have them have that experience. principal cindy shellhorn is happy to open up her school - although her mind is on the men and women risking their lives to defend the home town. 34:04 my youngest son is fighting this fire, we have staff members whose children husbands parents are fighting this fire. a sacrafice that hasn't gone unnoticed by governor susana martinez. 45:43 it'll always give me hope because the people who are here are experts at what they do. plus they are partnering with the community and the folks that live here and know their community try going to everything to make sure that fire doesn't impact a large community even small community. as for their nieghbors to the east in luna - they're considered family. 34:34 were here for them and hopefully they wont have to evacuate but i want them to know that were here. we're talking to luna ranchers who are calling this a complete disaster... more on what this community faces tonight at ten. the other major fire near the new mexico state line, the horseshoe two fire, continues to grow. it has grown to about 128- thousand acres in southeastern arizona. that's an increase of about 12-thousand acres since yesterday. here's a forest service map showing the area burned by the fire, south of i-10. it's 40 percent contained. take a look at this new nasa satellite photo, showing smoke from the arizona fires sweeping across the u-s. you can see the haze over eastern new mexico on the left, and a stream of smoke moving into missouri on the upper right. smoke plumes have been reported as far away as quebec canada, and the new england coast.
