o nicole by day we've been seeing the giant smoke plume from this fire barreling it's way near los alamos - by night take a look at ts. flames on the mountain overlooking the city and the national laboratory at last we heard -- 49-thousand acres. but we've seen this fire grow before our very eyes - even since we first saw the flames appear over the mountain at about 8 oclock this evening. minute thumbnail 10:08 pm and it feels like a ghost town here in los alamos -- there's not a single soul to be seen anywhere you drive in town --only emergency crews and that's been the big question here all day -- what's next. earlier this afternoon it was bumper to bumper traffic for miles as people packed what they could and hit the road evacuating los alamos. many saying they don't know where they're going - others afraid this may be the last time they see their homes. and it's not just everyday people feeling that sense of raw fear -- this monster fire has even the most hardened, the most seasoned of professionals shaken to their core. when i fly over those structures and i see the basements and see what's happened to them - my heart goes out to them because i know what they have to come back to. well we're a little nervous you know we haven't been through anything like this in an evacuation before so we're just going to grab the dog. here's a time lapse look at the fire peaking above the mountains this evening. we saw it first appear right around dusk. now as you can see it's alive and it's growing minute thumbnail 10:09 pm - with some flames racing downhill. here's where it is right now...in a word - frightening. but at the same time firefighters are working fearlessly around the clock to try to keep this giant fire from destroying the city and the lab. live in los alamos, eddie garcia kob eyewitness news 4.
