-and wal-marts statewide have pulled fireworks from their store shelves. this comes as the push to give state and local governments the power to ban fireworks picks up minute thumbnail 06:10 pm momentum - with an influential state lawmaker vowing to sponsor a bill. stuart dyson was the first reporter to kick the door open on this issue. he's here now with today's developments. state house judiciary chairman al park says he will sponsor the bill - and he's got some powerful company - the governor wants it - the mayor of albuquerque wants it - and thousands of new mexicans have facebook and twitter sizzling over this issue. in new mexico nobody can ban fireworks - they can restrict certain types - like the city of albuquerque does - but they can't ban them outright - even when fire danger is so extreme it's off the charts. judiciary chairman al park says he loves fireworks and the 4th of july - but somebody has to have the power to pull the plug when the need arises. " when the fireworks are actually going to have an adverse effect - the exact opposite of celebrating freedom by actually burning people's homes - we need to institute some sort of minute thumbnail 06:11 pm protections for our citizens." fire chiefs around the state agree with the ones in albuquerque - it's time for legislation like this. " we don't want to stop - take the fun away from everybody - but when we're in these extreme situations we need some help and i'm hoping the legislature will listen to our cries because it is serious at this point." " for fire departments across the state this is something that we have fought for years - unsuccessfully - and obviously you see the effects of the fireworks sales and manufacturing industry at work here." the governor's plan is to put the issue on the agenda for the special redistricting session of the legislature this september - representative park tells me that's good - but he wishes the legislature was in session right now to deal with the issue - back to you.
